Unit 17- P5 SECOND SUBMISSION.

Producing Special effects for 'The Space Guard':

Making of the model:

We made the model for the filming of 'The Space Guard' out of recyclable objects, such as cardboard, plastic bottles, and parts of an egg container. We designed the space stations so that it would look very cyclical with rotating wheels going around the bottle. We cut the egg container and stuck the point separator bits on top of the two plastic bottles so that it would have a pointy end, like a rocket. Then we cut circular shapes out of cardboard and but mashing tape round it so that it would have a smooth edge. we stuck the attachments to the bottles by cutting various slits and holes in the bottles at appropriate places. And then used a hot glue gun to stick all the attachments on. We attached the two bottles together with some layered cardboard, also with a hot glue gun. Then, the whole thing was painted with silver spray paint.

We then filmed the model against a green-screen, most of the shots that we filmed were low angle panning shots that were filmed freehand. Some of the footage that was filmed was on the floor with a bag of rice as a makeshift tripod so that the camera would stay flat. The bag of rice was then dragged across the floor, so that the the camera would stay flat for some of the panning shots. In the clip, you can see me doing one of the takes of the free-hand panning shots against the green-screen. In the clip, the model is on a green stool, against a green background which means that in post production we can use Chroma-key to remove the green background so that we can add in our own background.

Here is some of the footage that we shot that we decided to use in the finished product. The first shot, is one that we filmed for the explosion shot, we did a close-up of the back of the ship because that is the part of the ship that would have been the engine room, which was the part of the ship that exploded in the narrative.

The other shot that we decided to use in the finished product, was for the opening shot. We used this take because it is a wide panning shot showing the whole of the ship, and the name of the ship on the side. We decided that this was a good way to open the teaser scene as it would give the audience a good introductory insight into where the show will be set. Because of the low angle of the shot, and the fact that the camera was moving, it meant that we needed a very large green screen space so that the background would be covered the whole time. We did the panning using a bag of rice to keep the camera level at such a low angle. To create this shot, we needed two camera operators, one to move the bag of rice, and the other to focus the camera as the the camera moved closer to the subject.

SPFX Make-up:

In the production of 'The Space Guard' we used several different special effects techniques. One of them was a model space station which we filmed against a green-screen, and another was special effects make-up that we applied to the faces of the actors. To create the special effects make-up, first we used some scar wax, we put a thin layer of scar wax on the actresses face. Then we used liquid foundation to make the scar wax to match the actresses skin. Then we used some setting powder to make the foundation covered scar wax look like skin, and stop being shiny. Finally, we pushed little 3D gems into the scar wax so that the actress would look more alien than human as we wanted create a feel of diversity between the humans and the aliens on the space-ship.  We also added a flesh wound to the forehead of a different actress, so show that she was wounded in the explosion. To create the gash, we used the same technique, with using the scar wax, except this time, we used fake blood and red lipstick to show the severity of the wound.

We also used special effects make-up on the actress playing Captain Crain, to show how she was injured during the blast. Here is some of the original footage showing her make-up.
