Written report of the feasibility:

In terms of how feasible some of the special and visual effects were, there were some things that would not have been possible to complete in one way and therefore we did in a different way. For example, for the shot of the explosion of the space station, it was not feasible to use real pyrotechnics, as there would have been too many risks involved with making an explosion, even if it was only a very small explosion. The explosion would have been too difficult to control and somebody would have gotten themselves hurt. As well as this, the production does not have the budget for there to have been any real pyrotechnics involved. The way we got around this, was through the use VFX and layering various pieces of stock footage of the explosions to get the desired shot.

Another thing that would not have been feasible to do was have a whole set of the space station be built to scale, as that would cost too much money and take up too much time. It also would not have been feasible to shoot the footage actually in space as that would be almost impossible, or extremely expensive and implausible. To solve the issue of not being able to make a whole space ship set, we made a small scale model, as well as this, to solve the issue of not being able to put the model in space, we filmed the model against a green-screen, and then used VFX, chroma keying, and compositing, to make the model look like its in space.

We also planned to use special effects, or visual effects to make the Lieutenant an alien with a purple face. We started by thinking about using special effects and face paint to try to make the actress purple, but we decided that it would take too long. Then we decided to use visual effects in post-production by making a mask path with the hue of the layer manipulated so that her skin would be purple, unfortunately this took even more time. We decided that the effort and time it would take to make the character have purple skin, was not worth what the audience would get out of her being purple, therefore we scrapped the idea.
